What ever happened to the multi-sport athlete?

It is now more common than ever to have athletes that have specialized in only one sport while growing up. There are numerous reasons for this new trend, but should they specialize? More and more discussion has come up about athletes that play numerous sports being more well suited for specialization in one sport later on. If specialization occurs at too early an age, some would say that athletic skills development plateaus at a lower level and the athlete is more predisposed to chronic injuries.
