Beating the Common Cold

The holidays are over and the winter quarter is now in full swing.  With an increase in activity, sleep deprivation, and poor eating habits the common cold is more likely to attack.  To better prepare yourself and ward off the many unwanted symptoms it is best to take preventative care of your body.  The most helpful thing you can do for yourself is to practice good hygiene with plenty of hand washing! Getting the full recommended eight hours of sleep per night is also vital, as well as a well-balanced diet full of vegetables and fruits, and a multi-vitamin can be helpful.

Common symptoms for a viral cold include, but are not limited to a cough, runny nose, itchy throat, watery eyes, and body aches.  When treating a cold with over-the-counter medication it is important to first seek guidance from your certified athletic trainer and/or team physician.  The key in treating the symptoms quickly and effectively is to treat the specific symptom.

To break a fever, acetaminophen is most effective

An expectorant will counteract a heavy cough caused by congestion

An antihistamine limits a sneezing and a runny nose.
